Stage Management Roles at KYDS

PictureSalvatore Vuono / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

KYDS is currently searching for individuals with some experience of stage management to fulfil certain roles and help with future KYDS productions. These roles would be on an entirely voluntary basis.

More information about the roles can be found below. Please email hello@kyds.org.uk if you are interested or would like further details.

The Stage Management Team acts is responsible for the smooth running of all performances and to prevent anything from adversely affecting the production. They are the keystone of the production, bringing together the artistic process happening in the rehearsal room and the physical building, assembling and making happening outside of the rehearsal room.

The State Management Team is at the heart of the production and will work closely with the creative and design teams leading up to the production.

Stage Manager

The Stage Manager has overall responsibility for the running of the show. The SM manages everyone on the stage, coordinates the scene changes and all those backstage. Takes cues from the DSM.

Deputy Stage Manager (DSM)

The DSM plays a vital role in the rehearsal as well as the performance process and will usually be the most familiar with the show. The DSM:

  • Attends all rehearsals
  • Notes down decisions made by the Director and communicates these to the crew
  • Marks out the stage during rehearsals
  • Cues the show (tells actors, crew and tech when to ‘go’)

Assistant Stage Manager (ASM)

The ASM is responsible for ‘running the wings’ which usually involves helping to move props and scenery, operating smoke machines, opening and closing the curtains etc. The ASM takes their cues from the DSM and is responsible to the Stage Manager.  The ASM may sometimes have additional responsibilities, such as helping to source props.

Our week in ‘The Bubble’

[et_pb_section fb_built=”1″ admin_label=”section”][et_pb_row admin_label=”row”][et_pb_column type=”4_4″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text”]

From the 1st – 8th August, five KYDS volunteers were fortunate to attend the NODA 2015 Summer School, affectionately known as ‘The Bubble’ by those who have been lucky enough to attend.

The school takes place at Warwick Conferences in Coventry each year during the first week of August and offers a large selection of different courses each year, focussing on a range of different creative and technical areas in theatre. This year our five volunteers were split between the Lighting, Video Production, Design and Directing Musical Theatre courses.

The school is attended by hundreds of people, all with their own experiences, interests and expertise in amateur (and for many, professional) theatre. This also makes it a fantastic networking opportunity, and many students become friends and stay in touch for years to come. The week is intense, with the objective being for students to leave after the week having developed their confidence and skills as much as possible!

Two of our volunteers attending this year had already attended summer school many times, whilst the remaining three had never attended before. All of them came away however agreeing that the school offered an amazing experience and an invaluable learning opportunity.

Because KYDS is run entirely by volunteers, opportunities like this are so important to ensure that we are providing the best experience possible for our members. From morning warm-ups, to strictly come dancing theme nights, to karaoke, to end of week performances, every opportunity during the week offered new and exciting ideas which our volunteers will bring to KYDS to continue to improve the work that we do.

Our volunteers are already counting down to next year, who knows what they will be learning next!? KYDS would like to thank the NODA Summer School team for a fantastic opportunity and a wonderful week.

If you are interested in joining KYDS as a volunteer, get in touch with us today.

Highest achiever award goes to Sophie Stocker

Sophie Stocker has been presented the President’s Highest Achiever Award following the Society’s recent production of Alice in Wonderland.

The award is presented after every production by KYDS President Ray Banks to the cast member who, in his opinion, has achieved the most during the rehearsals for the production.

Ray said that Sophie, who played the Caterpillar, played the the character exactly as he had imagined in the finish after some initial difficulties with the part.

Congratulations Sophie on your award!
